8-bit 3D Monster Maze

Based on the ZX81 game by M.E.Evans & J.K.Greye Software this was originally presented for the 2002 Blitzcoder 8-bit Retro Competition and was a chance to recreate one of the first games I ever played.

Having come up with a relatively convincing ZX Spectrum “loading screen” sound/graphic sequence I originally intended to do the game itself in full ‘Colour-Clash-O-Vision’ as well, however, couldn’t work out the effect in time for the competition. Instead I settled for a 16-colour palette that was a little bit Speccy, a little bit C64. 🙂

Back in the ZX81 version, when Rex the dinosaur caught you and lurched at the screen, it was a pretty tense moment for early 80s computing. 20 or so years later I quite like to think I captured that same feeling with my version.

    • Hey Rod,

Thanks for the link to the video – enjoyed your reaction each time Rex caught you. It’s brilliant to see this being played 15 years on. 🙂

RE: remakes, aside from a couple of recent(ish) dabbles in Spectrum BASIC, I haven’t done any games programming for at least 10 years now. I don’t even know if I could program a ‘proper’ game in this Mobile / Windows 10 era but I’d love to give it a try one of these days.
